Day 6 –
We had the best nights sleep in weeks last night, jet lag gone, a huge bed, super comfy and nice and cold outside, in fact actually freezing outside. There wasn’t a cloud in the sky, so it was a great opportunity to wander around Sue and Toms huge garden with a big cup ‘a’ joe. Scrambled eggs and Toms home smoked wild Alaskan Sockeye salmon with capers for brekkie and we were good to go for a tour of the local town.
We headed to the ‘Farmory’ a local farmers market, which seemed to be run on child labour, but they seemed happy in their work so hey ho! Tom bought some more salmon to smoke, which he later showed us (in food channel style) how to prepare for smoking, he’ll show us tomorrow how to smoke it.
From the Farmory, we went off to ‘Indigeny’ a local cider mill, up in the hills outside Sonora. It immediately made a great impression, serving us free cider as we walked in the door. We tried a blackberry cider and an apple cider, both were really sweet, as the Americans like it, but both very nice.
It seemed to get busy suddenly and we were invited on a tour. A nice man called Jay who I believe ran the company, showed us the process of making cider, as well as vodka and brandy which they made on site. We had a glass of apple brandy, which Evie wasn’t a fan of, much to Jay’s horror.
From the cider works, we went home for some lunch before we separated. The women going out for a walk and the men, being hunter gatherers, going out to find food (at Safeway) and drink (at a local bar)
We are currently sitting by the fire, Brodie is helping me write the blog, Granny is knitting, Sue is on the wine, Tom is making Baba Ghanoush, which he says is the ‘shiznit’ and Evie is making an apple pie with apples from the cider mill.
